Alfred Jacob Miller is remembered for the only substantial visual record made of the Rocky Mountain fur trade at its peak. Born in Baltimore and trained briefly under Thomas Sully before studying in Paris and Rome, Miller was hired in 1837 by the Scottish adventurer William Drummond Stewart to accompany an American Fur Company caravan to the annual rendezvous on the Green River.
