Claude Emil Schuffenecker — French, 1851–1934 — Post-Impressionism
Claude-Émile Schuffenecker was a French painter, pastellist, and collector closely associated with the circle around Paul Gauguin and the artists who gathered at Pont-Aven. A childhood friend of Gauguin, he worked alongside him as a stockbroker before both turned fully to painting, and he was instrumental in organizing the 1889 Volpini exhibition at the Café des Arts during the Exposition Universelle, which introduced the Synthetist group to a wider audience.
