In The Woods

Pierre Auguste Renoir — French, 1841–1919 — French Impressionism

Renoir was a founding figure of Impressionism and among the movement's most prolific painters of the human form. Trained initially as a porcelain decorator in Paris, he studied under Charles Gleyre, where he met Monet, Sisley, and Bazille. His early Impressionist works of the 1870s, including scenes of Parisian leisure and dappled outdoor light, established his reputation alongside the group's first exhibitions.
