William McGregor Paxton was a leading figure of the Boston School, a circle of painters who fused academic figure painting with the tonal refinements of Vermeer and the plein-air observation of the French Impressionists. Trained at the Cowles Art School under Dennis Miller Bunker and later at the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Paxton built his reputation on quiet interiors depicting well-dressed women reading, arranging flowers, or attending to domestic tasks.
