John Atkinson Grimshaw — British, 1836–1893 — Victorian Aestheticism
John Atkinson Grimshaw was a Victorian painter known almost exclusively for his nocturnes — moonlit dock scenes, gas-lit suburban lanes, and rain-slicked city streets rendered with near-photographic precision. Working primarily in Leeds, Liverpool, and Glasgow, he developed a recognizable formula in the 1870s and 1880s: low-key palettes of bronze, silver, and amber; bare-branched trees silhouetted against moonlit skies; reflective wet pavement; and the distant figure of a solitary walker.
