Il Barroccio
Giovanni Fattori — Italian, 1825–1908 — Macchiaioli
Fattori was a leading figure of the Macchiaioli, the group of Tuscan painters who, working from the late 1850s in and around Florence, broke from academic convention by building form through patches of contrasting tone—the macchia. Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, he came to prominence with large military canvases drawn from the wars of the Risorgimento, including scenes of cavalry charges and bivouacs observed with dispassionate clarity.
