Description

Hudson River Landscape

John Williamson — American, 1826–1885 — Hudson River School

John Williamson was a Scottish-born American landscape painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School. He emigrated to Brooklyn as a child and worked primarily in the Northeast, painting the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and the rocky coasts of New England. His canvases tend toward the intimate rather than the panoramic, favoring quiet wooded interiors, lakes at dusk, and modestly scaled pastoral views rendered with careful attention to foliage and atmospheric light.
