Eugene Delacroix — French, 1798–1863 — French Romanticism
Delacroix is the central figure of French Romantic painting, the artist who set its color, tempo, and ambition against the linear restraint of Ingres and the Davidian academy. Working in Paris through the first half of the nineteenth century, he built large-scale compositions on literary, historical, and North African subjects, drawing from Byron, Shakespeare, and Dante, and from a formative 1832 journey to Morocco that reshaped his palette.
