Eastman Johnson — American, 1824–1906 — American Genre Painting
Eastman Johnson was a leading American genre and portrait painter who chronicled domestic life, rural labor, and national identity during a formative period in the country's history. Born in Lovell, Maine, he trained in Düsseldorf, The Hague, and briefly under Thomas Couture in Paris, absorbing the meticulous draftsmanship and tonal restraint of the Dutch Golden Age masters he studied at length in The Netherlands.
