Christian Rohlfs came to modernism late, after decades of academic landscape painting in the realist tradition trained at Weimar. His decisive shift began around 1900, when he encountered the work of Van Gogh and the emerging Brücke painters, and accelerated after his move to Hagen in 1901 at the invitation of patron Karl Ernst Osthaus.
