Vasily Polenov was a Russian painter associated with the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers movement that broke with academic convention in pursuit of subjects drawn from Russian life and landscape. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, he later studied in Europe and traveled extensively in the Middle East, gathering material for an ambitious cycle on the life of Christ.
