Paul Emile Berthon — French, 1872–1934 — French Art Nouveau
Paul Emile Berthon was a French printmaker and decorative artist working in Paris during the height of the Art Nouveau period. A student of Luc-Olivier Merson and a follower of Eugène Grasset, he specialized in lithography, producing decorative panels, posters, and magazine illustrations distinguished by muted, chalky color harmonies and flattened, ornamental compositions. His subjects were typically idealized female figures set among stylized flora—lilies, poppies, irises—rendered with the sinuous linearity characteristic of the period.
