Edward John Poynter was among the leading figures of British academic painting in the late nineteenth century, working in the classicizing tradition that ran parallel to, and often in dialogue with, the Aesthetic movement. Trained in Rome and Paris, where he studied under Charles Gleyre, he brought a continental rigor to English narrative painting, favoring archaeological precision in his depictions of antiquity.
