Gustave Dore — French, 1832–1883 — French Romanticism / Illustration

Gustave Doré was a French illustrator, printmaker, painter, and sculptor whose engraved imagery defined the visual character of nineteenth-century literary publishing. Largely self-taught, he began contributing caricatures to Parisian periodicals as a teenager and by his twenties was producing the wood-engraved illustrations for which he remains best known: editions of Rabelais, Balzac, Dante's Inferno, Cervantes' Don Quixote, Milton's Paradise Lost, and the English Bible.
