Wilhelm Trübner was a German painter associated with the circle around Wilhelm Leibl, the group of realists working in opposition to the academic conventions of mid-nineteenth-century Munich. Trained at the Karlsruhe and Munich academies, he absorbed the lessons of Courbet and the Dutch masters, painting figures, still lifes, and landscapes with a direct, broadly handled brushstroke and a muted, tonal palette.
