Oswald Achenbach was a leading German landscape painter of the nineteenth century and, alongside his older brother Andreas, one of the most influential figures associated with the Düsseldorf School. He specialized in Italian scenes—views of the Roman Campagna, the Bay of Naples, Tivoli, and the streets of Rome—drawn from repeated travels south of the Alps beginning in the 1840s.
