George Henry was a central figure among the Glasgow Boys, the loose circle of painters who pushed Scottish art away from sentimental Victorian convention toward a flatter, more decorative naturalism in the 1880s and 1890s. His early landscapes around Kirkcudbright, painted alongside E.A. Hornel, show a strong tonal handling and an interest in pattern over narrative; the celebrated collaboration with Hornel, The Druids, marked a turn toward bolder symbolism and rich surface.
