Emile Vernon was a French painter best known for idealized portraits of young women, often holding flowers, fruit, or songbirds against softly rendered garden backdrops. Trained in the academic tradition, he worked in the closing years of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth, a period when polished salon painting was giving way to modernist experiment.
