Archibald Motley — American, 1891–1981 — Harlem Renaissance / American Modernism
Archibald Motley Jr. was among the most distinctive American painters of the early twentieth century and a central visual chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance, though he worked primarily from Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. Trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he developed a vivid, jazz-inflected palette and an elongated, slightly mannerist approach to figuration that set his work apart from his contemporaries.
