Severin Roesen — German-American, c. 1816–c. 1872 — American Still Life
Severin Roesen was a German-born painter who emigrated to the United States around 1848, settling first in New York and later in Pennsylvania, where he spent his most productive years in Williamsport. He specialized almost exclusively in elaborate still lifes of fruit and flowers, working in a tradition descended from seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish models but adapted to the abundance and optimism of mid-nineteenth-century America.
