Sir James Jebusa Shannon — Anglo-American, 1862–1923 — Anglo-American Society Portraiture
Shannon was a leading society portraitist in late-Victorian and Edwardian London, known particularly for his sensitive depictions of women and children. Born in New York to Irish parents and raised in Canada, he traveled to London at sixteen to study at the South Kensington Schools under Edward Poynter. His early success came with a portrait of the Hon. Horatia Stopford, a Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881.
