Henry Ossawa Tanner — American, 1859–1937 — American Realism
Henry Ossawa Tanner was the first African American painter to achieve international recognition, building his career largely in France after relocating to Paris in 1891. The son of an AME bishop, he studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before turning, in his Paris years, toward religious subjects rendered with quiet psychological gravity.
