Edwin Lord Weeks was a Boston-born painter who built his reputation on extensive travel through North Africa, Persia, and India during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Trained in Paris under Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme, he absorbed the academic precision of the French Orientalists while developing a brighter, more atmospheric palette suited to the intense light of the regions he documented.
