William Morris Hunt was a Boston-based painter and teacher who played a central role in introducing French Barbizon aesthetics to American audiences in the mid-nineteenth century. Trained in Düsseldorf and then in Paris under Thomas Couture, he became a close associate of Jean-François Millet at Barbizon, whose tonal earthiness and dignified peasant subjects shaped Hunt's mature work.
