Albrecht Durer — German, 1471–1528 — Northern Renaissance
Albrecht Dürer was the central figure of the Northern Renaissance, a painter, printmaker, and theorist whose work brought Italian humanist principles into German art. Trained in his father's goldsmithing workshop in Nuremberg before apprenticing with Michael Wolgemut, he traveled twice to Italy, absorbing the proportional studies of Mantegna and the Venetian colorism of Bellini.
