Edwin Austin Abbey began his career as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly in the 1870s, where he developed a meticulous draftsmanship rooted in close study of historical costume, architecture, and gesture. He moved to England in 1878 and eventually settled there, becoming a Royal Academician in 1898.
