Jean Béraud was a chronicler of Parisian life during the Belle Époque, recording the boulevards, cafés, churches, and salons of the Third Republic with documentary precision. Born in Saint Petersburg to French parents and trained under Léon Bonnat, he abandoned conventional history painting for contemporary scenes after exhibiting at the Salon in the 1870s.
