Alice Pike Barney — American, 1857–1931 — American Symbolism and Portraiture
Alice Pike Barney was an American painter and cultural patron who worked primarily in pastel and oil, producing portraits and figurative compositions distinguished by atmospheric softness and a Symbolist sensibility. Trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran and briefly under Whistler, she absorbed the loose brushwork and tonal subtlety of late nineteenth-century French portraiture and adapted it to an American audience.
