Robert Henri — American, 1865–1929 — Ashcan School
Robert Henri was the central figure and chief theorist of the Ashcan School, the loose group of American realists who turned from genteel academic subjects toward the streets, tenements, and working people of early twentieth-century New York. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris, he absorbed the bravura brushwork of Manet and Hals and brought that directness to vigorous portraits and urban scenes.
