Isaac Israels — Dutch, 1865–1934 — Amsterdam Impressionism
Isaac Israels was a leading figure of the Amsterdam Impressionist circle, working alongside George Hendrik Breitner to record the modern life of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The son of the Hague School painter Jozef Israëls, he trained in The Hague before settling in Amsterdam in 1887. His subjects were drawn from the everyday rhythms of the city: seamstresses, milliners, café patrons, dancers, and crowds along the boulevards.
