Tintoretto, born Jacopo Robusti, was among the principal painters of the late Venetian Renaissance, working alongside Titian and Veronese. He took his nickname from his father's trade as a dyer (tintore). His mature style fused the rich color of Venetian painting with the dramatic figural invention of Central Italian Mannerism — a synthesis he reportedly described as the goal of uniting Titian's color with Michelangelo's drawing.
