David Wilkie — Scottish, 1785–1841 — British Genre and History Painting
David Wilkie was a Scottish painter who brought Dutch and Flemish genre traditions into nineteenth-century British art, building his early reputation on closely observed scenes of rural and domestic life. Works such as The Village Politicians and The Blind Fiddler, exhibited at the Royal Academy in the first decade of the 1800s, established him as a successor to Teniers and Ostade for a British audience.
