William Glackens — American, 1870–1938 — American Realism / Ashcan School
William Glackens was a founding member of The Eight, the group of American realists whose 1908 exhibition in New York protested the conservative academic standards of the National Academy of Design. Trained as a newspaper illustrator in Philadelphia alongside John Sloan and Everett Shinn, he brought a reporter's eye to scenes of urban leisure — park crowds, cafés, beaches, and shop windows.
