Poussin is the central figure of French classicism, though he spent most of his career in Rome, where he settled in 1624 and remained, with one unhappy interruption serving Louis XIII in Paris, until his death. Trained in the wake of Raphael and the Carracci, he developed a measured, intellectually disciplined manner built on clear contour, balanced composition, and restrained color.
