Jean Jules Antoine Lecomte Du Nouy — French, 1842–1923 — French Academic Orientalism
Jean Jules Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ was a French academic painter associated with the Orientalist current of the late nineteenth century. A pupil of Charles Gleyre and Jean-Léon Gérôme, he absorbed the precise draftsmanship and polished surface that defined the Salon tradition. Travels to Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and Romania supplied the architectural detail, costume, and atmosphere that recur throughout his work, often combined with literary and historical subjects drawn from antiquity and the Bible.
