Augustus Vincent Tack — American, 1870–1949 — American Modernism
Augustus Vincent Tack occupied an unusual position in early twentieth-century American art, working between academic portraiture and a private form of abstraction that anticipated mid-century developments. Trained under John La Farge and influenced by Symbolist currents, he built a respectable career painting portraits and ecclesiastical murals while pursuing, in parallel, a body of landscape-derived abstractions inspired by the cliffs and skies of the American West.
