Edwin Deakin — American, 1838–1923 — California School / American Romantic Realism
Edwin Deakin was an English-born American painter who settled in California in 1870 and became closely associated with the early San Francisco art community alongside William Keith and Samuel Marsden Brookes. He is best known for two sustained projects: detailed architectural studies of the California missions, which he painted in oil and watercolor over several decades, and richly composed still lifes of grapes, roses, and crumbling stonework.
