Charles Haigh-Wood trained at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he won the gold medal and a travelling scholarship that took him to Italy. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from the late 1870s onward, working in a polished academic manner that favored sentimental genre subjects, courtship scenes, and finely observed domestic interiors.
