Jacques Louis David — French, 1748–1825 — French Neoclassicism
David was the defining painter of French Neoclassicism and the dominant figure in European art during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Trained in the late Rococo academic tradition before studying in Rome, he developed a severe, sculptural style modeled on antique sources, exemplified by the Oath of the Horatii. His work fused moral seriousness with a clarity of line and composition that broke decisively from the prevailing court taste.
