Ivan Pokhitonov was a painter of small-format landscapes known for an unusually meticulous technique, working on mahogany panels with fine brushes and palette knives to achieve a jewel-like density of detail. Born in the Kherson region, he spent much of his career in France and Belgium, settling for long periods in Pau and later in Liège, while remaining connected to Russian artistic circles and exhibiting with the Peredvizhniki.
