Description
Cosimo I D Medici In Armour
Agnolo Bronzino — Italian, 1503–1572 — Florentine Mannerism
Bronzino was the leading portraitist of the Medici court in mid-sixteenth-century Florence, succeeding his teacher Pontormo as the city's foremost painter of the ruling class. His portraits of Cosimo I, Eleonora di Toledo, and their children defined a courtly image: sitters rendered with porcelain skin, impassive expressions, and meticulously described silks and jewels set against flat fields of cool color.
