Louis Jean Franáois Lagrenee, Aka Lagrenee The Elder, — French, 1725–1805 — French Neoclassicism
Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée, called Lagrenée the Elder to distinguish him from his younger brother Jean-Jacques, trained under Carle Van Loo and won the Prix de Rome in 1749. He worked in the transitional moment between late Rococo and emerging Neoclassicism, retaining the polished surfaces and decorative grace of the earlier style while adopting the historical and mythological subjects favored by reformers of French painting.
