Composition With Color Planes

Peit Mondrian — Dutch, 1872–1944 — De Stijl, Neoplasticism

Piet Mondrian began as a painter of Dutch landscapes, working in muted tonalities influenced by the Hague School and later by Symbolism. A move to Paris in 1911 brought him into contact with Cubism, which he absorbed and then pushed past, reducing trees, facades, and piers to gridded scaffolds of line.
