Francis Augustus Silva was a self-taught American marine painter associated with the late phase of the Hudson River School and its quieter offshoot, Luminism. Born in New York City to a Portuguese father, he worked as a sign painter before serving in the Union Army, turning to professional painting in the late 1860s.
