Walter Elmer Schofield — American, 1866–1944 — Pennsylvania Impressionism
Walter Elmer Schofield was an American landscape painter associated with the Pennsylvania Impressionists, though his career and sensibility set him somewhat apart from the New Hope circle. Born in Philadelphia, he trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz and later studied in Paris. Schofield is best known for large-scale, vigorously brushed winter landscapes and rugged coastal scenes, often painted outdoors in difficult conditions.
