Abram Efimovich Arkhipov — Russian, 1862–1930 — Russian Realism / Peredvizhniki
Arkhipov was a Russian realist painter associated with the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers), the late-nineteenth-century movement that brought social subjects and rural life into Russian academic painting. Born to a peasant family in the Ryazan region, he trained at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Perov and later studied with Polenov and the Makovsky brothers. His earlier canvases depict working women, laundresses, and scenes of village labor in muted, atmospheric tones.
