Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio after his birthplace in Emilia, was among the most original painters of the Italian High Renaissance. Working largely outside the major centers of Rome and Florence, he developed an idiom of soft modeling, dramatic foreshortening, and luminous flesh tones that would prove decisive for later Baroque and Rococo painting.
