Walter Gay was an American expatriate painter who spent most of his career in France, becoming known for refined interior scenes of European country houses and Parisian apartments. Born in Massachusetts, he trained in Paris under Léon Bonnat in the late 1870s, initially producing genre scenes and Breton peasant subjects in a Barbizon-influenced manner.
