Charles Sheeler — American, 1883–1965 — American Precisionism
Charles Sheeler was a central figure in Precisionism, the interwar American movement that distilled industrial and vernacular subjects into clean, geometric form. Trained in Philadelphia under William Merritt Chase, he worked as both a painter and a commercial photographer, and the disciplines reinforced one another: his canvases carry the sharp tonal clarity of the camera, while his photographs share a painter's regard for composition.
