Thaddeus Welch — American, 1844–1919 — American Tonalism / California Landscape
Thaddeus Welch was an American landscape painter associated with the early California plein-air tradition and the broader Tonalist sensibility of the late nineteenth century. Born in Indiana and raised in Oregon, he trained in San Francisco before continuing his studies at the Royal Academy in Munich and later in Paris.
